Auto Care Tips

Cooling System Flush

The engine cooling system maintains the correct engine operating temperature and provides heat for the passenger compartment. With automatic transmission vehicles it also provides transmission cooling. The system accomplishes this by circulating antifreeze and water coolant mixture throughout the engine and heating system then carrying excess heat to the radiator where it is dissipated into the air.

Engine coolant mixture has four important functions. First is to prevent freezing of the coolant in cold weather. Second is too increase the boiling point of the coolant to withstand high engine temperatures. The third coolant function is to inhibit rust and corrosion within the engine, cooling, and heating systems. Lastly, coolant provides lubrication for the coolant pump seal.

Why Flush Cooling System

Engine coolant mixture contains a large number of additives that degrade with use and time. Also, the large variety of different metals used in the cooling system and engine cause electrolysis interactions which acts like an acid that causes serious, hidden corrosion damage. In addition, sludge from corrosion builds up and plugs passages within radiators, engines and heating systems creating damage and costly repairs. Decreased antifreeze and anti-boiling capabilities also increase the risk of damage to the cooling system and engine. Poor coolant quality also contributes to premature coolant pump failure.

How Often?

It is always best to follow your vehicle's maintenance recommendations but most industry experts recommend replacing coolant every three years regardless of distance driven.

Please note: Coolant system servicing is a periodic maintenance service rather than a diagnostic or repair service. If you are experiencing problems with the cooling or heating system it is more economical to inform us before performing maintenance servicing.

Bottom Line

Regular servicing of your cooling system will prevent costly repairs and ensure your comfort and trouble free driving year round.
